Lairdís new Air to Air outdoor cooler protects telecommunication battery cabinets and outdoor kiosks from temperature variations, ensuring maximum uptime and reducing maintenance costs.

May 7, 2015 Ė Global technology leader Laird (LRD: London) today releases the new AA-480 Series Outdoor Cooler which improves the reliability of cellular coverage, keeping people connected during a power outage by protecting the emergency batteries used in wireless base stations.

When the power to a cellular antenna tower goes out, emergency batteries in the base station turn on to provide power for up to six hours. But battery life is significantly reduced by exposure to temperatures outside the optimal range. That is why many wireless base station operators take measures to ensure that emergency batteries are kept at the proper temperature extending the life of those batteries and ensuring more reliable cellular coverage during power outages.

Lairdís new AA-480 Series Outdoor Coolers protect these critical batteries by providing greater cooling power and increased reliability compared to other units currently on the market. And the AA-480 accomplishes this using less energy and taking up less space compared to similar units.

With a Coefficient of Performance (COP) rating of 1, they have nearly 50% more efficiency than standard air-to-air units offered today. This saves installation and maintenance costs for users as well as space inside the battery cabinet.

Due to its robust, steady-state construction, Lairdís AA-480 series also requires less maintenance, cutting the total cost of ownership as well as the time spent traveling to and from these sometimes remote locations.

"Long life operation is required in wireless base station applications to maximize uptime and maintain low cost of ownership," says Anders Kottenauer, Senior Vice President of Laird's Engineered Thermal Systems Business. "This product has a COP of 1, which is unheard of in our industry. That means it will run longer with less power consumption than previously designed thermoelectric based cooling units."

The AA-480 Outdoor Thermoelectric Cooler is an Air-to-Air thermoelectric assembly (TEA) that uses impingement flow to transfer heat. It offers dependable, compact performance by cooling objects via convection. The AA-480 has 480 Watts of cooling power and a COP = 1 at ?T=0įC.

Key System Features:

  • Designed to pass rigorous Telcordia testing
  • Input power accommodates a nominal/float voltage of 24/28 or 48/56 VDC
  • Power cycle tested up to 100K cycles
  • Environmentally friendly solid state operation with no CFC refrigerants
  • Fans can be controlled for reduced noise
  • Cooling and heating in the same unit to maintain compact form factor.

The AA-480 complements the product family of Outdoor Coolers for harsh applications but can also be easily retrofitted as a substitute for compressor based air conditioners used in medical diagnostic and analytical instrumentation for cooling and heating applications where maximizing system uptime is required.
